Barnet Council will provide an extra waste collection for Jewish people celebrating the festival of Passover.

The special service will operate along 300 routes, making it easier for people to dispose of "chametz", or leavened products made from five different types of grain, which Jewish people are forbidden to eat or have in their homes during the eight-day festival.

This includes such foods as bread, pizza, cakes and beer.

Passover commemorates the story of the Exodus, in which the ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt.

The festival begins on the 15th day of the month of Nisan in the Jewish calendar, which is in spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

Jewish people who do not live on one of the council’s dedicated routes can call the council to arrange a free collection.

The council has requested that anyone wishing to make use of this service places their food waste, without packaging, into their green waste bin.

The council will collect the green waste on April 6 from a number of streets.

The list of roads covered can be seen at www.barnet.gov.uk/pesach-collection.

Anyone wishing to organise a chametz collection can call the council on 020 8359 4600.
