A fundraiser with cerebral palsy is one of Barnet’s Olympic torchbearers.

Simon Davies, 36, who lives a Jewish Care home in Golders Green, uses a wheelchair and cannot talk without the help of a voice synthesiser, or computer.

He is a part-time volunteer in the fundraising team at Jewish Care, where he is responsible for writing letters of thanks to people who have donated to the charity.

Mr Davies also runs an online greeting card business, the profits of which are donated to the Jewish Care home where he lives.

So far his company, Simon Says, has raised more than £20,000 for the home.

Mr Davies will carry the Olympic torch in Barnet on July 25, having been nominated by his father.

Mr Davies said: “It is a privilege and I am looking forward to it.

“I was nominated by my dad and he had a huge role to play.

“Without this job at Jewish Care, I would just be looking at a wall all day.”

Mr Davies will be one of 30 torchbearers in Barnet, but he is yet to find out which part of the route he will be covering.

Ruth Merrian, a colleague of Mr Davies at Jewish Care, said: “Simon is an inspiration to all who know him and to all who are lucky enough to work alongside him.

“He is a natural born giver with an easy and natural wit, which makes him a valuable member of the team, not only for the work he does, but also for his contribution to team spirit.”
