Edgware Residents Association says Barnet’s roads need serious repair work before “someone is killed”.

Chairman of the association, Robert Abby is outraged at the number of pot holes across the borough and has noted numerous road markings have worn away.

He said: “In some areas the road has gone down to the bare rock. It’s appalling and has a dramatic effect on road safety.

“The give way signs have worn away on hundreds and hundreds of roads and cars just come straight out because they don’t see the dotted lines. It’s only a matter of time before someone is killed.

“Barnet Council must take responsibility for road safety in the borough. It is getting too dangerous now.”

Mr Abby, who lives in Francklyn Gardens, also says too many cars are getting away with driving above the speed limit in many of the borough’s back streets.

He said: “Cars are driving 50 to 60mph – there’s no control, no police patrolling to enforce the speed limits and it’s just total chaos.”

A Barnet council spokesperson said: "If we receive a report of a pothole we will visit the site within 48 hours then, depending on the extent of the problem and the location, make a temporary fix or arrange for a more permanent fix. Following a mild winter, reports of potholes are significantly lower in the borough this year than the previous two years.

"Reports of worn away road markings would be identified through a number of sources including inspectors who travel around our road network and traffic wardens. Any issues would be fed back to the highways team and investigated."
