The new Mayor of Barnet was officially sworn into office at Hendon Town Hall last night.

Councillor Brian Schama is the borough’s 48th mayor and will be supported by his wife Lynda as Mayoress.

Cllr Schama said: “I treasure the honour of being the 48th mayor of our wonderful borough.

“I’m proud of what has been achieved in Barnet over many years. It is a pleasant and safe haven for all.

“Times are difficult for the UK with the current economic climate but we should never forget to celebrate all that we have here for which we can be justifiably proud - our residents, schools, hospitals, local businesses and our multi-faith community living together in harmony.”

Cllr Schama, who was born in Golders Green, has always lived in the borough. He has been married to Lynda for 38 years and has two sons.

Prior to being married, the couple mentored children in the care of the Norwood Orphanage.

Councillor Schama also has 40 years experience managing leading retailers and manufacturers in the UK and abroad.

During his mayoral year Cllr Schama has chosen to support Barnet Carers, which supports more than 5,000 carers, and Barnet Hospital.

Councillor Kate Salinger has been appointed deputy mayor and Councillor Brian Salinger as the deputy mayor’s escort.
