A couple who won £1 million on a lottery draw had to put their celebrations on hold for the arrival of their baby daughter.

Andrew Symes and Natalie Metcalf discovered they had scooped the EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker prize the night after it was drawn on February 1.

But all thoughts of their win were pushed out their head the next day when 37-year-old Ms Metcalf, from Thornbury, near Bristol, had her first labour pains.

Their daughter Poppy was born on February 5, and the couple were finally able to collect their winnings.

They planning to use the cash to buy their own home and have a dream wedding.

Mr Symes, 40, said: “This win couldn’t have come at a better time. We have our beautiful children and now we can get married and buy a perfect house to raise them in.

“As well as feeling so happy about the safe arrival of our baby girl, we just feel so relaxed. We’ll be able to buy a home and not even have to worry about a mortgage.

“To not have to think about that additional cost every month is almost a second windfall in itself.”

The couple were at their Thornbury home with their two-year-old son on February 2 when they decided to check their EuroMillions ticket for the previous night’s draw.

Ms Metcalf said she had been dancing round the living room singing “we’re rich, we’re rich” because she had just sold their old pushchair.

At the same time, Mr Symes was checking the ticket, and said to her: “yes you are!”

She added: “It’s so funny to think of now, but the couple who’d bought our pushchair had paid in cash and I was dancing around the living room singing, ‘we’re rich, we’re rich’, when Andy turned to me and said, very seriously, ‘Yes, yes, you are,’ and made me check the ticket.”

The pair phoned Camelot and arranged an appointment for a winners’ adviser to meet them to arrange the payout for the following Tuesday.

But the next day the couple, who don’t own their current home, were out viewing properties when Natalie had her first labour pains.

Mr Symes, who works for a pensions firm, said this pushed all thoughts of winning completely out of their minds.

He added: “We were totally focused on making sure that Natalie and the baby were OK and it wasn’t until the baby was born and we were home that we had a moment to think, ‘wow, has that really happened?’ and start making plans.”

After Poppy’s birth, which was an hour before their initial appointment with a winners’ adviser, the pair were able to reschedule and collected their £1 million prize.

They have since resumed their search for their “perfect house” and are planning their wedding.

Ms Metcalf said: “We’d always joked that the only way we could ever afford to buy our own home was if we won the lottery. We didn’t know that that would prove to be true.

“As well as the house, we’re also going to start planning our wedding. We’ve been engaged for over two years but now we can afford to have the wedding of our dreams without feeling guilty about the costs.

“This win really will help us make all our dreams come true.”
