COUNCILLORS have been criticised for failing to act to help get names put on the Edgware War Memorial two years after they were first told about it.

Members of the public and Hendon MP Andrew Dismore asked Councillor Brian Gordon, who was chairing the Hendon Residents' Forum, why nothing had been done.

The discussion was provoked from a question by environmentalist Clive Cohen about cleaning up Hendon War Memorial.

Recently veteran Reg Lacey made a renewed call for 250 names of those who fell during the Second World War to be added to the Edgware memorial in the High Street.

The 81-year-old has been in discussions with other groups around the area to see what the best option for adding the names would be.

Mr Dismore, the chairman of the Edgware branch of the Royal British Legion told the meeting: “I first raised this with you two years ago to see whether we could get these names added.

“I provided you with a list of names but nothing has happened for two years despite your assurances it would be dealt with. Why have you not dealt with it?”

When deputy chairman Cllr John Hart pointed put the stone stands just on the Harrow Coucnil side of the border Mr Dismore responded: “We were going to work with Harrow to work it out and we have not.

“Harrow say they would like to work with Barnet on it and are waiting for you you to speak to them.”

However, Cllr Brian Gordon said: “I can't personally do it. The funds do not seem to be available. I do agree something should be done so let's look at it again.

“But it's a silly attitude that because we did not get results we did not do anything.

Mr Lacey, 81, has been talking to other groups in the area who have successfully added names to their memorials to find a way to do it as the stone itself has no room left.

He is now advocating putting another stone close to the monument for the names to be added to and has called on anyone who may have had a relative from the area who died in the war to contact him by email on reg.lacey.t21@btinternet.com.
