David Stephens believes Barnet “need to get a better start to matches” but feels the Bees were deserved winners at York City on Saturday.

Edgar Davids’ side fell behind inside the opening ten minutes after a free-kick into the area struck Stephens and the ball rolled into his own net.

However, the Bees fought back throughout the opening 45 minutes and levelled when Andy Yiadom forced the ball over the line for close range.

Barnet were unable to dominate the second period but a goal from Jake Hyde proved to be enough for Davids’ side, who secured an important three points in their relegation battle.

When asked about the Bees start to the game, the towering centre-back said: “It is something we have to look at as a team and work on.

“Once we got into the game we controlled it, so we need to get a better start to matches. However, we are delighted to come away with the three points.”

He continued: “Once we got used to the pitch we started play the ball around quite well. In the second half we didn’t play as much as we wanted to but we dug in and showed the character that’s been here since the manager came in.”
