Barnet FC is appealing to supporters for information about a smoke bomb let off in the stands that could have cost the club a winning goal.

The Bees were denied a last-minute winner during their match against league-leaders Cambridge United on Saturday when the linesman flagged for a corner after the ball disappeared into the smoke cloud.

With the score at 2-2 in the final moments of the match, the official flagged as the ball was cleared into the smoke.

It was still in play when it dropped back to young striker George Sykes, who tapped in from close range, but the goal was disallowed.

The device was set off by a supporter in the South Terrace at the club's stadium The Hive, in Camrose Avenue, Edgware.

The club says it is taking the matter “very seriously” and has promised anonymity to anyone who comes forward.

In a statement posted on its website, a club spokesman said: “The club and local authorities are taking this matter very seriously and we would remind supporters once more that you should not under any circumstances bring any smoke bombs, flares or pyrotechnic material into the stadium. This is not just for your safety but the safety of other supporters.”

Bees head coach Edgar Davids said the decision to rule out the goal was “horrible”.

Anyone with information can telephone the club on 020 8381 3800 and ask for Steven Barron.
