Barnet host Grimsby Town in the FA Trophy second round on Saturday and Bees director of football Paul Fairclough says he will make sure the club take the “winnable” competition seriously.

Edgar Davids’ side made it through the opening stage with a 1-0 victory against Hayes & Yeading while the Mariners needed a replay to overcome Coalville Town.

The final of the competition is held at Wembley Stadium and with 11 Skrill Premier sides already eliminated, and another three guaranteed to exit at the weekend, Fairclough says it is vital the Bees don’t treat the Trophy lightly.

He said: “I am going to make sure everyone takes it seriously. Having lost in a semi-final, it is a painful experience to miss out. We have a long way to go though, but the supporters would love it.”

He continued: “The fans love cup competitions and especially ones that they know are realistically winnable.

“So the Trophy needs to be a real big competition on our agenda. Promotion is the main aim but the Trophy is next on that list.”

Barnet and Grimsby have agreed that the tie will go to extra-time if the score is level at 90 minutes. However, a replay will take place next Tuesday if the contest remains undecided after the additional 30 minutes.
