Barnet finishing below part-time sides in the Skrill Premier proves “something isn’t right” at the club, says Bees head coach Martin Allen.
With one game remaining this season, Barnet sit eighth in the table. Part-time teams FC Halifax Town and Braintree Town are guaranteed to end the campaign above the Bees while Alfreton Town are just a point behind.
Allen, who took charge at Barnet midway through March, says things need to change and is planning “surgery" over the summer.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Braintree on Monday – the Bees' final home game of the season - he explained: “This time next year I don’t want to be standing here having this conversation.
"The crowd clapped our players off at the end of the match and I hope our players and staff did what they were told to do, which was to go into the middle of the pitch and appreciate the supporters.
“This time next year we want the gaff to be buzzing. We’ve been polite and nice today but the bottom line is we’re mid-table.
“There are part-time clubs finishing above Barnet so something isn’t right.”
He added: “The aim (next season) will be to win each game and do as best we can. We’ve got to do some surgery and work is needed without a shadow of a doubt.
“Part-time clubs have finished above us so you don’t need to be a brain surgeon or rocket scientist to know something needs to change.”
Allen used the two games over the Easter weekend to assess his squad. Jack Saville and Kieran Cadogan were the only members of the first team squad not to feature in either the 1-0 win over Nuneaton on Saturday or Monday’s draw against Braintree.
Saville’s absence was due to a toe injury while Cadogan has left the club after being told to search for football elsewhere.
Academy graduates Iffy Allen, Luke Gambin and Jamal Lowe started against Nuneaton while Elliot Johnson played the full match against Braintree.
When asked if Allen was keen to use young players from the Bees’ youth system, he replied: “I’ll use anyone as long as we win games. I’m not here to use Academy players. I am here to win football matches.
“That’s what the Barnet supporters want. It doesn’t matter where they come from, if they’re good enough we’ll play them and if they’re not good enough we won’t.
“I took Iffy off after an hour on Saturday so I could give him some game time here. Gambin was good in the second half against Nuneaton which shows they do have talent and ability.
“But the job and name of the game is to put a team together that could win matches.”
