A last-gasp Jack Taylor strike saw Barnet pick up their first win of the season at the expense of former boss Martin Allen’s Chesterfield side.

The Bees went into the game on the back of three successive defeats in the National League, but with it increasingly looking like the visitors would have to settle for a third draw of the campaign substitute Taylor fired a left-footed strike from the edge of the area into the top corner.

The contest had seen both sides fail to capitalise on earlier opportunities, with Charlee Adams forcing Callum Burton into a good save with a rising strike.

It was then Barnet goalkeeper Mark Cousins’ chance to impress as he tipped over a dipping volley from Robbie Weir, before Michael Nelson headed narrowly off target following a Lawrence Maguire free-kick.

The second half was equally tight, with the hosts going close from a goalmouth scramble before Taylor struck at the death.

The victory moved the Bees up to 19th in the table ahead of Monday’s clash with John Still’s former club Dagenham & Redbridge.
