Watford striker Alex Jakubiak was unable to help Bristol Rovers return to winning ways on his first league start, as Darrell Clarke’s men were beaten 1-0 by Burton Albion.

The defeat extends Rovers’ winless run to four league games and leaves them rooted in the bottom four.

Jakubiak, who penned a season-long loan deal with the Gas in August, was handed his first league start by Rovers boss Clarke after scoring his second goal for the club in their EFL Trophy win over Yeovil Town last Wednesday.

There was another Watford connection in the starting line-up too, with former Hornet Jack Bonham starting between the posts for the League One side having moved to the Memorial Stadium on loan from Brentford in August.

Jakubiak squandered a great chance to put the Pirates ahead when he dispossessed Stephen Quinn and raced through, but his touch was heavy after rounding goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov, meaning Burton were able to scramble the ball away.

That miss proved to be costly, as Ben Fox popped up in the 91st minute to hand Burton all three points in a tight game at the Pirelli Stadium.

Fellow Watford loanee Randell Williams was also on the losing side in League One, after Wycombe Wanderers lost 1-0 to Coventry City.

The winger played 78 minutes before being replaced by Paris Cowan Hall, as Conor Chaplin’s header eight minutes from time secured Coventry all three points at the Ricoh Arena.
