Nathaniel Chalobah came off the bench to make his senior debut on a memorable night for him and England as Gareth Southgate's men beat Spain 3-2 in Seville in the Nations League tonight.
Having been an unused substitute in Friday’s goalless draw in Croatia, the Watford midfielder was given his first appearance by Southgate as an injury-time replacement for Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks.
In doing so, Chalobah became the first outfield player to represent England while playing for the Hornets since John Barnes faced Brazil in May 1987.
England were leading 3-1 when the former Chelsea youngster, who made 97 appearances for his country at various youth levels, entered the fray after three high-quality first-half goals from Raheem Sterling (2) and Marcus Rashford had seen the visitors stun Spain as they opened up a 3-0 lead.
Paco Alcacer reduced the deficit in the 58th minute but England were to retain a two-goal advantage, with fortune on their side at times, until Sergio Ramos netted a second in the seventh minute of injury time.
