Barnet were unable to build on their FA Cup upset at Bristol Rovers and close in on the National League play-off zone as they went down to a 2-1 defeat at home to Gateshead.

The Bees remain 11th in the table after the loss, but are now eight points behind seventh-placed Gateshead, who claimed their first victory in five matches.

The visitors made the breakthrough in the 20th minute when Scott Boden netted from close range.

Luke Moylneux almost made it two when he fired against the crossbar, a miss that looked to have proved costly for the Heed when Jack Taylor levelled matters in the 57th minute.

But John Still’s side were unable to push on from restoring parity as Luke Armstrong scored what was to prove the winner with 13 minutes remaining, although substitute Manny Duku did go close to a second leveller when he headed against the woodwork.

Barnet: Cousins; Taylor, Alexander, Adams (Bettamer 76), Reynolds, Johnson, Robson, Fonguck (Sparkes 73), Sweeney, Harrison, Walker (Duku 83). Subs not used: Matrevics, Elito.
