Much of the talk in the build-up had been of a first meeting with Marco Silva since his departure from Watford, but come full-time it was disappointment and frustration as the Hornets were denied a first win at Goodison Park by a last-gasp Everton equaliser to snatch a 2-2 draw.
A Seamus Coleman own goal and a quick-fire second from Abdoulaye Doucoure had looked increasingly to be enough to earn a first win in six matches for Javi Gracia's men after Richarlison had put the Toffees ahead with an offside goal and Ben Foster had saved Gylfi Sigurdsson's second-half penalty.
But the visitors were to suffer a heavy price for Christian Kabasele's handball deep into injury time as Lucas Digne curled in the resultant free-kick to grab a point.
Here are a selection of images from a dramatic night on Merseyside.
