Southgate finished their Mens Hockey League Conference East season with a 3-1 loss away at Oxted.

The visitors turned in a credible performance against the league’s second-placed side, especially having played leaders Old Georgians last week and having made seven forced changes to the side.

A relatively even first half was eventually broken by Oxted’s Tim Guise-Brown, who converted via a penalty corner after Chris Rae had stopped his effort.

The home side doubled their lead nine minutes later when they prevented a Southgate counter attack which saw Steven Rich one-on-one with Rae and he lobbed home.

Oxted added a third against the run of play early in the second half when the ball found Chris Webster at the far post who deflected the ball home.

Southgate did, though, find a late consolation, with Rob Shearer adding his name to the scoresheet.

With promotion already secured, Southgate can look forward to Division One hockey next season but must wait to see if they will be placed in the North or South conference.
