Barnet suffered their first defeat of the season in the National League as Inih Effiong’s injury time goal gave Dover Athletic all three points at The Hive.

The game looked to be heading for a goalless draw until the third minute of stoppage time when Effiong arrived at the back post to convert.

Darren Currie named an unchanged 11 to the one that had beaten Notts County at the weekend, with the only change to the entire squad being Charlee Adams’ inclusion on the bench over Elliott Johnson.

The Bees’ first opportunity of the game came following a nervy opening 10 minutes and fell to Jack Taylor, but he fired over from Medy Elito’s corner, and David Tutonda’s effort also failed to trouble Lee Worgan in the Dover goal.

Following a strong appeal for a Barnet penalty, Dover broke away and almost snatched the lead, but Callum Reynolds put in a superb sliding tackle to block the effort in what was the final action of the first half.

The hosts were still creating all of the attacking opportunities even in the second half, and they had a golden chance to take the lead when a cross found Elito at the back post, but his header was terrifically kept out by Worgan before Dunne fired over.

In a rare Dover attack, they came the closest to breaking the deadlock as Bobby Joe Taylor unleashed a powerful effort from 25 yards that crashed off the crossbar, and that seemed to spark them into life.

So much so that, in the final minute of injury time, the Whites landed the sucker punch when Scott Loach could only parry Jai Reason’s effort into Effiong’s path, and he calmly headed home to steal the win.

Defeat for the Bees sees them drop down to 10th after four games played, and they will be looking to get back to winning ways this weekend when they host Chesterfield.
