Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has said he is unsure of what his future holds, but admitted he would find it difficult to turn down a contract extension at Vicarage Road.

In October 2019, the Brazilian seemed to have his heart set on a life as a pastor and an agent, working to bring young South American talent into the European leagues, but ended up extending his contract with the Hornets by another year.

That contract is due to expire in June, but the 39-year-old is open to the idea of staying on for another season yet and, with Brazilian teenager Joao Pedro now at Vicarage Road, the club may want to keep the shot-stopper around for a bit longer.

"If clubs like Watford or PSV want to appeal to me, saying no is a lot harder," he told the PSV website.

“[Last year] the club asked if I wanted to help. Watford has always been good to me and made it clear that I was needed. That appreciation is important to me.

“I don’t know [about my future], I will decide sometime in the coming months. It also depends on what comes my way.

“Isn’t it great that I still play in the strongest league in the world?

Gomes did distance himself from the possibility of going into a coaching role, however, and said it was very unlikely to happen.

"Never say never," he added, "but I do not expect that to happen."

Gomes suggested he would like to go back to PSV in the future to work in an off-field capacity, perhaps as an ambassador and said he regretted the way he left the Dutch side,

Asked if he would consider a return to the Netherlands, he said: "A role at PSV? Well, I would like to get closer to PSV after my career. As a PSV ambassador, for example, a bit like what Carlos Salcido is doing in Mexico, for example.

"I never officially said goodbye to the supporters after I left. My biggest disappointment in football is the way I left PSV, through a fierce interview and a collapse of my friendship with Jan Reker [then general manager]. Enough has already been said, but I regret it."
