Northampton Town 1 Barnet 3 . . .

It was nice while it lasted.

And the Barnet fans certainly enjoyed singing: "We are top of the league."

This fourth league win on the trot propelled the Bees to the summit of League Two on Friday night, a position they held until Saturday evening, when most of their rivals took to the field.

Manager Ian Hendon certainly revelled in the extra media attention, the Football League Show TV cameras at the Sixfields Stadium to record Barnet's brief moment of glory.

But Hendon is not a man to rest on his laurels. He wants his side to be up there at the end of the season too.

And, on this showing, the Bees might indeed be capable of sustaining a promotion push.

It was not a perfect performance, but Barnet, not for the first time this season, were stronger after the break, finishing off the Cobblers in a ruthless 20-minute period at the start of the second half.

Northampton had scored just before the half-hour, something none of Barnet's previous four opponents had managed to do against them.

Hendon said: "I'm disappointed that we conceded a goal, but if that's all I've got to moan about, there's not much wrong."

Indeed, there does not seem to be much wrong at the moment. Barnet have conceded just four goals in six league games, even with their back four being beset by injuries.

With Ismail Yakubu back to his best and those that have come in around him pulling out the stops, the Bees have had a solid base to build upon.

One of that back four - Ahmed Deen - only secured his long-term future with the club last week, but he capped that with a first goal for the club on Friday night.

Just five minutes of the second half had gone when Deen curled a free-kick into the bottom corner.

Striker Paul Furlong then put Barnet ahead with a stunning strike. He swung his boot first-time at an Albert Jarrett cross and the ball looped over keeper Chris Dunn.

John O'Flynn wrapped it up, capitalising on hesitation at the back to roll the ball under the legs of Dunn.

As Hendon wisely pointed out, it is only six games and too soon to get carried away, but no-one would have begrudged 'little' Barnet their moment of glory on Friday night.
