Barnet will have a nervous final day of the season after failing to secure their League Two survival at Blundell Park this afternoon.

The Mariners, who needed to beat the Bees to avoid the drop themselves, did just that with two second-half goals.

It means they are now just one point behind Barnet going into the final game of the campaign next Saturday.

New caretaker boss Paul Fairclough could not inspire the Bees, though they did hold out for an hour, knowing a point would have been enough this afternoon.

But Grimsby deserved their win and celebrated as though they had already secured their League Two survival, a pitch invasion following their second goal in the closing stages of the game.

Fairclough's charges know their fate is still in their own hands, however. A win at home to Rochdale next weekend would be enough, regardless of what Grimsby do at Burton Albion.

Fairclough made three changes to the side that lost to Accrington in midweek.

In came Ahmed Deen, skipper Micah Hyde and winger Albert Jarrett.

Ex-Bee Dean Sinclair, who helped Barnet gain promotion to the Football League under Fairclough, started for the Mariners. Sinclair, now playing for Charlton Athletic, is on loan at Blundell Park.

The first half was, not surprisingly, very tight and tense, though Grimsby were the better side and created the better chances.

The best came midway through, Tommy Wright finding himself one on one with Barnet keeper Jake Cole. Fortunately for the Bees, Cole won the battle, pulling off a fine save.

Barnet actually started the second half much brighter and Joe Devera almost put them ahead with a header, but it was straight at the keeper.

And the goal came at the other end through Robert Atkinson on 59 minutes, his first of the season. It was ironic it should come at a time when the visitors were enjoying their best spell.

The strike sent the bumper crowd wild and put a different complexion on the match.

Now the Bees were the team that needed to find a goal from somewhere.

Not surprisingly, the visitors' sense of urgency increased the longer the game went on, Barnet now throwing everyone forward in a bid to find an equaliser.

However, despite the pressure, it was the Mariners who found the net again, Mark Hudson with a brilliant finish in stoppage time.
