Lee McConnell missed out on a medal at the European Athletics Championships as she took fifth place in the 400m.

The Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier, who claimed bronze in the same event ten years ago, crossed the line in 52.20, missing out on an A standard time.

She clocked a season’s best of 51.98 to take first place in her semi final but was unable to repeat the trick and put herself on the podium.

“I knew it was going to be tough tonight having ran two runs Saturday and Sunday, but I’ve enjoyed the championships,” she told the UK Athletics website.

“It’s tough to run at a championships and get the time you’re looking for off the back of the Trials.

“I’m running better than I have done and I’m moving in the right direction. Unfortunately maybe just not quick enough for selection for London.

“But I think come London, I definitely think I’ll be where I really should be now and hitting those times.”

McConnell was also in action in the 4x400m relay where she helped the team to a fourth place finish.

The Scottish competitor replaced Kelly Massey for the final as the quartet stopped the clock in 3.27.81, leaving them just behind the team from Czech Republic who claimed the final podium position.

Also in action from Barnet was Abi Oyepitan who went in the 200m.

Oyepitan recorded another Olympic A standard time (23.05) in her heat but missed out on the final of the event as she crossed the line fifth in a time of 23.22 in the semi final.

The triple jump saw Larry Achike post a distance of 16.25m but this was not enough to advance to the final.

Completing Barnet’s representation at the meet was Jade Nicholls.

She threw 51.75m in the discus but that was only good enough for an 11th place finish in Group A, meaning she too missed out on the final.
