Drama will be the order of the day for the final round of Women’s Super League fixtures before the winter break takes hold, with sides jostling to get in position ahead of a fortnight of recuperation.

Current pace-setters Arsenal travel to Everton as they look to enter 2020 at the summit, while Chelsea and Manchester City will have eyes on reeling them in, with Brighton and Liverpool standing in their respective paths.

At the other end of the table, the Reds will be desperate for an early Christmas present at Prenton Park against Emma Hayes’ side, as they continue their search for a first league win of the season.

Bristol City and Brighton will also be keen to pull clear of the drop- one ahead of the new year – and with that in mind, here’s everything you need to know ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.

Everton v Arsenal

Sunday, KO 12:30pm, Haig Avenue Reigning

Barclays FA WSL champions Arsenal face a tough test when they head north on Sunday, with an Everton side who have impressed this season no doubt ready to ask them questions.

The Toffees currently sit fifth in the table, level on points with Manchester United above them, having won three of their four home league games this term.

History, however, shines on Joe Montemurro’s outfit; the Gunners are currently on an eight-match winning streak against Everton, and have triumphed in 14 of their last 16 away games in the league.

And with Vivianne Miedema up top, anything is possible – she has scored in her last five Arsenal appearances and has Kim Little’s club record streak of six well and truly in sight.

Manchester City v Brighton

Sunday, KO 12:30pm, The Academy Stadium – Live on the BBC Red Button

Three points back from Arsenal, Manchester City have ground to make up if they are to regain the title that they last won back in 2016.

Nick Cushing’s side welcome the Seagulls for what will be the third Barclays FA WSL meeting between the sides, with the Citizens running out 3-0 and 6-0 winners in the first two.

Making Brighton’s task all the more unenviable is City’s imposing home record: they have won each of their last seven league games at the Academy Stadium, while Hope Powell’s team have yet to score on the road this season in domestic action.

Perhaps the best chance they’ve got, though, is going long: no team in the division has scored a higher proportion of goals from headers than Brighton since September 2018; they have netted 35% of their efforts that way.

Birmingham City v Manchester United

Sunday, KO 2pm, SportNation.bet Stadium

Manchester United and Birmingham City will meet for the first time in the WSL on Sunday, just four days after meeting each other in Continental League Cup action.

Casey Stoney’s side emerged with a comfortable 3-1 victory in Solihull on Wednesday, with goals from Lizzie Arnot, Jane Ross and Ella Toone enough to give the Red Devils the win.

And the visitors will hope they come away from another trip to the Midlands with all three points as United look to put the squeeze on the top three going into the festive break.

United’s points tally of 15 after nine WSL matches is the best record for a promoted side since Sunderland (18) at the same stage in 2015, leaving them six points behind their city rivals.

Liverpool v Chelsea

Sunday, KO 2pm, Prenton Park

All the statistics suggest that Liverpool are in for another tough afternoon at Prenton Park as they welcome in-form Chelsea with the goal of ending their winless league streak.

Emma Hayes’ side have won nine successive Women’s Super League games against Liverpool, which is the most victories any side has had against a specific opponent in the competition.

The visitors are also unbeaten in their last 25 WSL away trips (W17 D8), scoring 66 goals and conceding just 14 in the process, having last tasted defeat on the road in 2017.

And having impressively come from behind to beat title rivals Manchester City last weekend, Chelsea will be keen to pile the pressure on leaders Arsenal – who sit just two points ahead of them having played a game more.

Reading v Tottenham Hotspur

Sunday, KO 2pm, Adams Park

Two of the league’s most inconsistent sides of late will do battle at Adams Park when Reading welcome Tottenham Hotspur for their first league meeting since January 2013.

The Royals’ main issue has been keeping clean sheets, with Kelly Chambers’ side failing to shut out the opposition in each of their last seven league matches.

Tottenham had similar issues before last weekend’s 1-0 success against Brighton, which saw them get their first clean sheet in six games to move two points ahead of Reading in the table.

But with a game in hand over their visitors, a repeat of their 4-0 triumph over Spurs in the Continental League Cup in September would be the perfect Christmas gift for the Royals.

Bristol City v West Ham United

Sunday, KO 3pm, Stoke Gifford Stadium

West Ham United have had Bristol City’s number in their previous two WSL meetings, with the Hammers winning 2-0 at home and 2-1 away in their duels last season.

The hosts are in desperate need of the three points as well, having failed to pick up a win in the league so far this season to leave them hovering just above bottom-placed Liverpool.

But with three defeats in their last three WSL matches, confidence will not be high at the Stoke Gifford Stadium against a Hammers side with only two defeats in their last seven away games.

Whatever the result, City’s Loren Dykes could join an illustrious club if she takes to the field as she would be just the fifth WSL player to make 100 appearances for the same club.
