Once the focal point of every living room, the fireplace is now more often replaced by the TV as the centre of attention in modern homes. But trends are changing and many people are coming round to the idea that whether it is powered by coal, electricity or gas, or just an ornament, a fireplace can be the star attraction of the room.

To make the most of your fireplace, first work out what type of fire you want to have. There are a huge range of fires on the market, from coal or wood-effect gas fires to more unusual sculptural appliances. Some use geometric-shaped coal' or use copper bowls to hold the flames. Others are arranged to look like just a pile of pebbles that sit in an alcove cut into the chimney breast. In short, the sky is the limit and modern appliances and techniques make it is easy to create really individual features that suit both your property and your budget. If you do choose a gas fire, the installation must be carried out by a Corgi-registered gas fitter who will ensure that the appliance is safe and has the correct ventilation to remove toxic gases.

Traditionally a fireplace held an open coal fire but many people who move into period properties find that existing fireplaces have been blocked up. If you are intending to unblock it and put it back in use then you will need some expert advice to make sure that it is safe to use. Get a chimney sweep to check the condition of your chimney and, if you are having a real fire, you will need to get it swept every year to prevent the possibility of chimney fires or of smoke and gases blowing back into the room.

Many urban areas have been designated as smokeless zones so it is worth checking whether this is the case, before you install a new fire. If there are restrictions in place, it is possible to buy smokeless fuel which should solve the problem.

Electric fires provide a clean and effective way to heat the room. Often they are free-standing so they can be moved around to suit your needs and will plug in wherever you have a socket.

And because it doesn't have any emissions, you don't need a chimney. But even though you can't beat the warmth and cosy atmosphere created by a real fire burning in the hearth, modern central heating means that we don't often need any additional sources of heat. However, the fireplace doesn't necessarily have to be functional in order to be the focal point of the room.

Installing a beautiful fire surround and using it as a place to display fresh flowers, an ornament or even an individual touch like a selection of carefully chosen pebbles, can be a great way of using the space. If done well, a decorative fireplace can be just as effective as one filled with glowing embers. This is also a good way of using the space during the summer months when there is no need for extra heating.

Fireplaces don't have to be a thing of the past and once you've tried one, you will agree that there are few things to beat the feeling of snuggling up in front of a fire on a stormy night.
