Thames Water is hoping to reopen The Burroughs in Hendon by 6pm today.
Traffic in the area has been chaotic since a water main burst on Monday, forcing the road to be closed.
A main burst outside Hendon Town Hall at 1am on Monday and Thames Water engineers repaired it by 6am.
However, as they finished mending the original burst pipe, another one sprung a leak.
This second leak caused so much damage that a significant part of the road needed to be resurfaced.
The closure has resulted in bus routes 143, 326, 183, 643, 653 and 683 being diverted.
It has also caused congestion on Brent Street and Church Road.
In a statement Thames Water said: “The repair is going to plan and we have laid the new tarmac over the road this morning.
“This should be set later today to allow us to reopen the road before 6pm.
“We'd like to apologise for the disruption this is causing.”
