Barnet Borough Council has outlined £20,000 plans to improve road safety at four accident black spots.

At a meeting of the Hendon Area Environment Sub-Committee, in Hendon Town Hall, on October 16, it was agreed that new safety measures for the hotspots should be implemented.

The committee was informed that at the junction between Parson Street and Finchley Lane, in Hendon, 16 people were injured between October 2008 and September 2011.

This figure included two serious injuries and 14 slight injuries.

The crashes were caused by a range of factors including pedestrians wearing dark clothing at night, drink driving, speeding and icy conditions.

To try and reduce the number of accidents, the council is considering spending £5,000 installing more street lighting, and reviewing pedestrian crossings and traffic light phasing.

Council officers are also considering removing guard rails on the pavement at this site in the hope this would motivate drivers to slow down through the junction.

The money for these changes would come from the 2012/13 Traffic and Road Safety budget.

The second black spot considered by the committee was the junction between West Hendon Broadway and Park Road, in Hendon.

At this site there were 14 injuries between October 2008 and September 2011.

One of the accidents resulted in a serious injury, the rest resulted in slight injuries.

These crashes were caused by factors such as drivers disobeying traffic signals, sudden braking and aggressive driving.

At this site there were also accidents as a result of drivers passing too close to cyclists and horse riders and learner drivers showing inexperience.

At this junction the council is considering spending £15,000 on improving drainage and the grip of the road surface.

Following a site visit, council officers also recommended that the junction could be made safer by de-cluttering the footway and carriageway to reduce the potential for driver confusion.

The funding for this work would also come from the Traffic and Road Safety budget.

The third site considered by the committee was the junction between Edgware Road and Colindale Avenue.

At this junction between October 2008 and September 2011 there were 13 injuries, one of which was serious.

The crashes were caused by factors including drivers losing control, dazzling sun and travelling too fast in poor driving conditions.

The committee agreed not to take any immediate action to improve safety at this junction as it will be improved anyway as part of the Colindale Area Action Plan scheme which is currently being developed.

The final junction considered by the council’s committee was that between Edgware Road High Street and Station Road, in Edgware.

At this junction 13 people were injured between October 2008 and September 2011.

None of these injuries were serious.

They were caused by factors such as sudden braking, speeding and driving too close to the car in front.

The committee agreed that the council should continue to monitor the junction as part of future hotspot analysis.

Therefore, no action will be taken at this site currently.
