A group of Bosnian siege survivors will attend a party in Golders Green on November 15.

The party will be held at Jewish Care, in Golders Green Road, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their arrival in the UK.

In 1992 the group of 120 Bosnians, many of whom were Jewish, arrived in London having fled from war-torn Sarajevo.

Their escape from the siege was organised by Sarajevo Jewish community, La Benevolencjia.

Once they arrived in the UK the refugees were supported by World Jewish Relief and Jewish Care.

These charities organised housing, benefits and language lessons for them.

Members of the group continue to attend weekly meeting at Jewish Care’s Holocaust Survivors Centre in Church Lane, Hendon.

Among others, the party will be attended by Branko Danon and Ela Smiljanic.

Mr Danon, 74, was an architect in Bosnia and he acted as the group’s community worker.

He now works as an assistant director at Jewish Care.

Ela Smiljanic was just 12-years-old when she left Bosnia with her family.

Since arriving in the UK she has graduated from the University of Central London with a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry.

She now works as a researcher at the medical research centre in Mill Hill developing new medicines.
