A mother-of-two from Mill Hill has gathered 225 signatures on a petition calling for a new pelican crossing in Edgware.

Susie Kaye, who runs an HR and employment law consultancy, has submitted a petition calling for a pelican crossing on Broadfields Avenue, to Barnet Borough Council.

Mrs Kaye has two daughters, aged six and four, both of whom attend schools on a connecting road.

She believes that it is “an accident waiting to happen” and that a pelican crossing is necessary to prevent someone being injured or killed.

The worried mother said: “People speed up as they come down the hill – the cars go much too fast.

“At busy times it is difficult even for adults to cross and children are encouraged to walk to school.

“I was amazed by the response to the petition. I haven't previously organised one, but something had to be done.

“The number of signatures in such a short space of time shows the strength of feeling about something which could so easily be improved.”

She added: “People won’t let older children walk to school alone because they have to navigate this really busy road.

“Everyone would feel much safer if there was a crossing.

“We need something visible that will make traffic stop.

“So many children would benefit from a crossing – that is the really important thing.”

Within three days of launching the petition more than 200 people had signed it.

Many of those who joined the campaign are equally concerned about the safety of the road.

Maddy Cordell, from Edgware, said: “It is an extremely dangerous road, and I am currently unhappy about my children crossing this street without a suitable crossing.

“Many, many children cross this road. It is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed.”

Juliet Brett, whose daughter attends Rosh Pinah School, said: “Please make this road safer for our children and instate a pelican crossing.”

The Times Series is awaiting a comment from Barnet Borough Council.
