Edgware Town Centre has been awarded £10,000 to help tackle the key issues faced by its businesses.

As part of the government’s Mary Portas Review, which aims to inject new life into shopping parades, Business Minister, Mark Prisk, announced that Edgware would receive the funding.

The move comes after a review carried out by TV retail guru, Mary Portas, which came up with proposals aimed at turning around the fortunes of the UK’s high streets.

A Town Team, made up of local businesses and community leaders, will meet to discuss the issues faced by businesses and what they can do to revive the prosperity of Station Road.

The Town Team will work with Barnet Borough Council, and the local police, to counteract challenges faced by Edgware, including crime, parking and the future development plans for the area.

This will involve developing a plan of action for Station Road which will include a series of community events to generate interest within the local community.

Councillor Richard Cornelius, Leader of Barnet Council said: “This is welcome news, which will help give Edgware Town Centre a real boost and will allow the Town Team Partners to showcase the wonderful variety of businesses on offer in the run-up to Christmas.

“Edgware is a vibrant shopping area and this cash will help to promote and enhance public perception of this important high street.”

The £10,000 grant comes with the offer of support from the Association of Town Centre Management who are offering their expertise to promote best practice across the country.
