A Royal British Legion branch is hoping a new generation of supporters will revive its annual memorial march next month.

Members of the New Edgware RBL will parade through the town on Remembrance Sunday before a service at the High Street war memorial.

Numbers have dwindled in recent years but organiser Harry Hearn is hoping a younger generation will get out and give their backing to British troops, past and present.

He said: “It is about recognising the current situation our troops are in, in Afghanistan and other places, as well as remembering those who died in the two world wars. We want to show our support.”

The annual parade begins at the legion’s headquarters in Parnell Close, at 9.45am, before travelling along Broadfields Avenue, Hale Lane and Station Road to the stone memorial.

Following the service, the march will return to the headquarters, via Edgwarebury lane and Edgware Road, where refreshments will be provided.

The parade will be headed by the Shree Muktajeevan Pipe and Drum Band and the Borehamwood Brass Band will join in at the memorial.

Mr Hearn, a member of the legion for 40 years, said: “The atmosphere is always terrific – people come out of their houses to support us.

“If it wasn’t for those who have given their lives in service over the years, we wouldn’t be here today. We want to get more people involved in what is a worthy cause.

“Our job is to encourage the new generation to support our troops and get behind these sorts of events.”
