Police in Barnet have been given additional powers to stop people drinking excessively in public.
A Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) will come into force from November 19 and is aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour and crime resulting from alcohol.
The order gives police the power to arrest someone if they continue to drink or fail to hand over their alcohol when asked to do so.
If convicted by a court, they could face a fine of up to £500.
The order was agreed following joint discussions among the council, Barnet Police, Community Action Panels and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
