Developers reveal plans to replace KFC drive-through with hotel in Apex Corner
A KFC drive-through on a busy junction could be knocked down and replaced with a hotel if plans are given the go-ahead this week.
Developer Ace Investments wants to construct the hotel on Apex Corner at the intersection between the A41 and the A1.
The building would be four storeys high at its highest point, with 88 bedrooms and basement parking for 56 vehicles.
Some residents living in nearby Ellesmere Avenue are unhappy about the plans, which they say would increase traffic flow, noise and litter as well as intrude on their privacy.
Mary D’Silva, who has lived in Ellesmere Avenue since 1965, has collected some 18 signatures against the plans.
She said: “The hotel is going to be an unwelcome giant. All the windows will look directly onto my garden – I definitely don’t want that. We wouldn’t have any privacy.
“Traffic will also be a problem. We’ve already got a lot of people parking in Ellesmere Avenue – we don’t want even more.”
But Jonathan Kamara, who has lived in the road for three years, said: “I think it will be a lovely thing for the area because it will create more jobs. It will also make the area look better.”
Plans to build the hotel were originally given the green light in 2009 but having failed to find an operator for the hotel within the last three years, developers need to reapply for planning permission.
Indigo Planning is submitting the plans on behalf of the developer. Director Helen Greenhalgh said: “We do understand local concerns. These issues were assessed as part of the last application and considered acceptable by the council.
“Our client will endeavour to find a hotel operator and when built this hotel would improve the appearance of this busy junction, create jobs and help the local economy.”
Barnet Borough Council will decide whether to grant planning permission at the west area planning sub-committee on Tuesday.
