The cordon is still in place around a sports ground where a young woman was found dead in a suitcase.

The body, which was found in woods running alongside Dollis Brook in Thornfield Avenue, has not yet been identified.

A post mortem examination will take place at 2pm this afternoon at Finchley Mortuary.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide and Serious Crime Command are investigating.

Police are asking anyone who might have seen someone moving a heavy black suitcase on wheels on or after July 18 to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command said: “We are still in the early stages of this investigation and urgently require the assistance of the public to help us establish the circumstances around the murder of this young woman.

“We are specifically appealing to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious towards the latter part of last week.

“We are also interested in hearing from anyone who is concerned about any young adult females who have gone missing from the immediate area recently.

“If you have any information that can assist us with our inquiry please do get in contact with the police.”

Barnet Borough Commander Chief Superintendent Adrian Usher said the discovery of the body on Sunday was a “tragic and shocking” thing to happen.

He said: “I am sure local people will be feeling unsettled by this news.

“Crimes of this serious nature are incredibly rare in our borough, which may only add to local concern over what has happened.”

Chief Supt Usher reassured residents Barnet Police was working closely with specialist homicide teams to solve the murder during this "difficult time."

He said: “I know that the investigation will be thorough, professional and the team will pursue every line of enquiry to track down whoever is responsible.

"Local people can help that investigation by providing the police with any information, no matter how small."

Officers from Finchley Church End Safer Neighbourhoods team have increased foot and vehicle patrols in the area and will be talking to residents to answer any concerns and provide up to date information.
