Two hero police officers who saved the life of a woman knocked unconscious when her car plunged into a freezing pond have been shortlisted for a bravery award.

PC Ryan Perry, 38, and PC Marc Cash, 27, dived into the icy waters of the fishing lake in Totteridge Lane in February after the woman reversed off the jetty in the early morning.

The Nissan Micra was already largely submerged when the pair arrived at the scene at 8am and the unconscious 32-year-old driver had water up to her chest.

Despite the numbing temperatures, the officers managed to swim to the car and smash the window using a glass hammer before dragging the woman to the bank.

She was later taken to hospital with back injuries but the Metropolitan Police said she was unlikely to have survived for much longer in the freezing waters.

Despite their brave actions, the officers later told the Times Series that they did not consider themselves heroes.

The two police officers have been nominated for the Met’s Outstanding Bravery Award for 2013, but need the public to vote online to help them win.

Voting closes at midnight on Sunday, January 12. To cast your vote for Barnet’s officers, follow this link and vote for PCs Perry and Cash.

The winners will be announced at the Excellence Awards ceremony on Wednesday, January 22.
