Health workers have been experiencing what life is like for older people.

Healthcare assistants (HCAs) at the Royal Free Hospital, in Pond Street, Hampstead have been using age simulation suits to understand the problems their older patients face.

The suits include ear plugs to replicate deafness, and masks for the effects of cataracts.

A back brace, weights and gloves also recreate what it’s like to have arthritis and muscle weakness.

Maggie Maxfield, a lead nurse for the training programme, said: “It allows HCAs to have an appreciation of the challenges some of our patients are facing and why simple tasks such as standing, sitting and walking often take time and cannot be rushed.”

The suits were paid for by the Royal Free Charity.
