The suggestion of turning street lights off to save money has been labelled a “dangerous idea”.

The idea was discussed at a working group of the environment committee at Hendon Town Hall this evening.

A range of options are to be considered, which also includes turning them off between 11pm and dawn, and between 1am and dawn.

The proposals could help contribute to £5.9m of savings by 2020, according to Barnet Borough Council.

Although the working group cannot make recommendations or decisions, members expressed concern at the proposals.

Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Labour’s environment spokesman, added: “It’s a dangerous idea. There’s a big problem about fear of crime. I feel it’s just not a wise move.”

Cllr Schneiderman, who represents Woodhouse, added: “The report says it’s unlikely to be supported by police. I am of the opinion that the proposal isn’t taken."

Declan Hoare, housing and environment lead commissioner for Barnet Borough Council, said police had been approached for their view.

He said: “I haven’t got a response but the question has been asked. We have asked police to provide evidence. There’s certainly an issue around fear of crime.”

Golders Green councillor Dean Cohen also expressed his concern and said he would not support it.

Cllr Cohen, chairman of the environment committee, added: “I think it’s important we do get that police correspondence.”

Another suggestion to save money is to stop locking the borough’s 26 parks at night, which could save £85,000 a year.

Ingrid Posen, chairman of the Friends of Childs Hill Park, spoke at the meeting. She said: “We had real problems when our park wasn’t locked.

“Locking the park won’t keep everyone away but it will deter some people. It’s quite important, in order to prevent crime.”

The group’s suggestions will be put into a report, which will then go to the environment committee next month.
