A student is training to race through the capital's streets in aid of the “amazing” hospice that cared for his friend’s mother.

George O’Shea, of Lowther Drive, Enfield, is one of thousands getting ready for this year’s London Marathon, in April.

He will be one of 19 people running for the North London Hospice, in Woodside Avenue, Finchley.

The student says he is running after seeing first hand the care and support the hospice offers families.

Although he is currently in his first year of sport science at the University of Brighton, Mr O'Shea says he spends most of his time preparing for the race.

He said: “At the moment I’m not worried about it but when it gets closer to the time I know I’ll be nervous. My biggest fear at the moment is that I won’t be able to complete it.

“My best friend’s mum had cancer and was cared for by the hospice, so seeing the amazing work it does really inspired me to do this.

“The treatment and care they received from the charity was immense. Hopefully soon a cure will be made so my friends and other families won’t have to go through such a horrible time.”

Mr O'Shea has set himself a fundraising target of £2,500 but with six months to go, he is already a quarter of the way there with £560.

The keen Arsenal supporter added: “Families will continue to need the support of the North London Hospice and they will need support as they can only help others if they have enough funds.

“They can only achieve their vision by generosity and kindness, so please sponsor me as it's for a great cause.”
