Confidence in the police in Barnet is ranked as one of the lowest in London in new data.

Out of the 32 boroughs, Barnet was placed at number 25 for confidence in the police, with 65 per cent of people overall saying they felt confident during the last year.

The highest London borough was Richmond, where 86 per cent of people said they had confidence in the police, while Newham was the lowest, with 49 per cent.

Confidence levels in the police differed throughout Barnet, with the borough divided into four neighbourhoods – Barnet, which recorded 70 per cent during the last two years, Colindale, with 67 per cent, Golders Green, with 74 per cent, and Whetstone, with 68 per cent.

The data has been published through two new online tools – the confidence dashboard and the neighbourhood confidence comparator – which allow people to see how their police force is performing compared to other areas.

Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime in London Stephen Greenhalgh, who launched the tools, said: “The Mayor and I have been clear - cutting crime is not enough, we need to see a boost in Londoners' confidence.

“Right now in Barnet, confidence in the police is not as high as we would like, although some parts of the borough have higher confidence scores. We hope these tools will be used by local police leaders to make fair comparisons between similar neighbourhoods in order to learn from areas of London with higher levels of confidence.”

Maureen West, chairman of Barnet's Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, said: "The trouble is we don't have the police numbers, as the budget has been cut. With burglaries and all other crimes, you need them in the wards. You cannot have confidence in police that aren't there.

"The police we have got are doing an amazing job. They give 110 per cent. They are desperate to keep Barnet safe, but how can they keep people safe when you don't have enough police?"
