A family won an award for their volunteer work.

Barnet mother Katie McDonagh and her daughter Scarlett picked up a volunteer of the year award from the charity Epilepsy Action at a ceremony in Leeds last week.

Scarlett, 13, has epilepsy and featured in a DVD for the charity last year to share her experiences about having brain surgery, having had five operations in an attempt to control her seizures.

Katie has also been involved with the charity by helping to support other families and share their experiences.

Katie said: “Both Scarlett and I, along with the rest of the family, are touched to receive this award from Epilepsy Action. Knowing that talking about our experiences actually plays a part in improving the lives of other families is very rewarding.”

Philip Lee, chief executive at Epilepsy Action, said: “Despite all they have been through, they have given a lot of themselves to help and encourage others. They are truly inspiring. This award is a fitting and deserved tribute for their efforts and successes."
