PARENTS have launched a petition for traffic calming measures outside a “dangerous” road near a school.

Lucy Clyde and Becky Howard, whose children go to Manorside Primary School, in Squires Lane, say the road is plagued with speeding drivers, crashes and near misses.

They want a 20mph speed limit to be introduced, filter lights at the crossing at the Squires Lane and Long Lane junction and a zebra crossing.

Ms Howard said: “’This is a community drive to improve road safety. We want to get things moving and engage everyone.

‘’The tipping point came after a recent collision between a bus and a van where Squires Lane meets Long Lane.

‘’It’s such a dangerous road and we need to do something before there are any tragedies.’’ They also want a zebra crossing between Manorside and Tudor Schools.

Ms Howard added: “Children are going back and forth and there just isn’t anywhere safe for them to cross.’’ Zion Stelitz said: ‘’I fetch children from Manorside School several times a year.

“On all occasions I feel strongly aware of lack of protection from traffic hurtling by, and fear for the children's and my own safety.’’ Andrew Ramos said: ‘’I am a parent of a child at Manorside school. The crossing leading to the school is incredible dangerous and we see many near-accidents every day, as drivers speed along Squires Lane at high speed and with limited visibility.

“Serious accidents have happened already and it is clear that the next accident involving a child from the school is only a matter of time if measures are not taken to reduce car speed.’’ The petition needs 2,000 signatures by the end of March before Barnet Council can consider the petition.

Currently, 500 people have signed it.

The Times Series is awaiting comment from Barnet Council.
