Hendon’s RAF museum is one step closer to realising its centenary dreams as it receives another £1.8 million in funding.

In 2018 royal air force will mark 100 years, with plans underway for a renewal of services at the RAF museum to commemorate the occasion.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has granted the museum £1,783,700 of funding for phase 2b of its centenary programme.

The museum is now even closer to its overall fundraising target, with less than £7 million left to raise.

CEO of the museum Maggie Appleton said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the support they have given us.

“Our collection is all the more significant because the RAF museum stands on an historic site – one which is woven into the narrative of British aviation.

“It is therefore wonderful we have this opportunity to restore, recreate and share the stories of our fabulous heritage.”

Phase 2b, called ‘Historic Hendon’, focuses on sharing the historical significance of the museum’s site as the London Aerodrome in the early 20th century and later RAF Hendon.

Drawing on archive and collection artefacts, the museum will work with local volunteers to research and develop interpretation and activities that reference the site’s unique airfield heritage.

The new funding means the landscape at the heart of the site can now be transformed to create a “sense of place” linked to that heritage including a new village green for the local area.
