More than 100 residents were given an insight into the workings of their local library, which will reopen under a new partnership brought about by council cuts.

Barnet Council has committed to saving £2.2 million on spending for the boroughs libraries as part of a wider programme of spending cuts in 2017.

Several libraries have been or will be closed and then reopened in partnership with nominated charities and organisations.

Mill Hill library was put under a partnership with NW7 Hub, who presented their vision of the renewed services to residents on Sunday (January 29).

Their version of the library will continue to provide core services including books, study resources, computer access and wifi.

Resident Tom Cheasty said: “It was really useful as I met the team and am reassured the library will be in good hands going forwards.

“I am particularly pleased it is a local group who know and love Mill Hill and was very impressed by the large attendance and genuine commitment by local people to support their library.”

Presentations and displays featuring opening times, volunteering opportunities, proposed activities and services gave the visitors a glimpse of what they library will do.

The NW7 Hub team will receive training and ongoing support from the council’s Library Community Engagement Officers.

NW7 Hub trustee Chris Wong: “We are working closely with Barnet Council to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.

“We are confident with the package of support available to us, we will be able to maintain the level of service our community has previously enjoyed.”

The NW7 Hub team are currently looking for volunteers to receive the necessary training and to help launch the library in April.
