Neighbourhood watch volunteers followed a suspect who spat on and performed Nazi salute at Jewish men in Golders Green on Sunday.

The volunteers from Shomrim, a neighbourhood watch charity, followed the suspect at a safe distance down Golders Green Road before contacting the police.

The suspect, a 26 year-old man, gave a Nazi salute to one man outside 134 Golders Green Road at around 10pm, before continuing down the road to spit on a second Jewish man.

Investigations and enforcement director at Campaign Against Antisemitism Stephen Silverman said: “The abuse of Jews with the language and symbols of Nazi Germany is intended to maximise the distress caused to the victims.

"It is a form of antisemitism expressly designed to arouse fear, and must be treated severely by the criminal justice system if others are to be deterred from employing it.”

Shomrim NW London also tweeted the the suspect had shouted abuse at the two men, who have not been identified.

Chief executive of Shomrim NW London Gary Ost said: "We are grateful for the swift response by Barnet Police who arrested the suspect.

"We are supporting the victims to this unacceptable behaviour."

Police were called and arrested the suspect for a racially aggravated public order offence just after 10pm.

The suspect is being held in a north London police station, with enquiries still ongoing.
