A murder investigation has been launched after a man was deliberately run over in Finchley.

Police were called to reports of a car hitting a pedestrian in the car park of the Great North Leisure Park off High Road, Finchley, at around 8.30pm on Wednesday, May 31.

As well as police, the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended the scene.

The pedestrian - a 23-year-old man - was taken by London's Air Ambulance to an east London hospital but he was pronounced dead the following day.

His next-of-kin have been informed.

Formal identification and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

The car - a white BMW - was abandoned at the location, and the driver and passenger fled the scene heading towards Finchley High Road. Enquiries continue to trace the driver of the BMW and any other people involved in the incident.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command (HMCC) are now investigating,, led by Detective Inspector John Marriott.

At this early stage it is believed that the victim was assaulted during a fight involving a number of people in the car park. Shortly afterwards the car was deliberately driven at the victim.

There were no other reported injuries following the incident.

DI John Marriott said: "I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it to come forward and to assist us with our investigation.

"This horrific attack occurred in the midst of half term and there would have been a number of people who would have been in the vicinity having enjoyed the facilities at the leisure centre.

"Our enquiries lead us to believe that a number of people may have filmed part or all of the attack; this is now a murder investigation and I would implore those that did film this incident to provide any footage they have. The information you hold could be key to establishing the full circumstances which led to this young man's death."

No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact the police incident room on 020 8345 1570.
