Latin music still plays here, but where there was once space for dancing you will now find tables of people drinking and dining.

Once a place where you would find salsa in Camden market, The Cuban Bar is now Gabeto – a restaurant offering modern British cuisine in an industrial yet modern decor.

Times Series:

Fairly new in its setting, I visited on a Thursday evening and was surprised that it wasn’t as busy as the bustling streets outside. Despite its chic and alluring look, with so much competition in the area I presume it will take a while for business to take off.

While perusing the menu my partner and I order olives (£3), which were drenched in garlic and jalapeno and undoubtedly the best I’ve ever had.

We then wet our appetites with a couple of cocktails. I had the Gabetonia £11), made up of Absolut raspberry vodka stirred with fresh pomegranate, raspberry syrup, rosemary and fresh lemon was light and crisp, despite its sweet contents. While the Early Dawn (£12) of Reposado tequila, fresh grapefruit, Cointreau, lime, agave and soda was equally crisp, but with more of a kick than the sweetness of mine.

To start I had guac on the block (£8). That is, guacamole freshly made at your table and served with house nachos. The waitress, albeit a little nervous, certainly mashed up a delicious dip and as simple as it might sound to some, I promise you it was a spectacular starter.

My other half chose the beetroot cured salmon (£11) with chive and crème fraiche. It was a modest choice, but did the job.

For the main he then went for grilled marinated king prawns (£24) with chilli and lime butter and both skin-on fries (£4) and mac and cheese (£5) for the sides. At £24 you may be surprised the prawns didn’t come with a side dish, as I was. There were well cooked but somewhat lacking in flavour, making it quite a steep price.

The mac and cheese, however, was delectable. I was left to surmise there were a few secret ingredients not listed on the menu that gave it a wonderful flair, standing out from other variations.

I went for the whole lobster (£30) with garlic butter, served with triple cooked chips and watercress. The butter needed far more garlic, but otherwise it was a lovely dish with evidently fresh lobster.

Despite having little space left in us we decided to have a dessert, one each in fact! In keeping with the Latin spirit that lingered lovingly I went for warm churros (£7) with chocolate sauce and an absolutely incredible warm salted caramel sauce.

My partner choice to chocolate and hazelnut tart (£8) with vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately it was terribly dense and not all that sweet.

I have very mixed feelings about Gabeto. Despite having the best olives around I was ultimately left wanting more in all areas of food and service.

While there has been great investment and care taken into the look of the restaurant, I think a little more care needs to be given to the flavouring of the food and while the team were lovely and helpful, they seem to still be getting to grips with the place as things moved a little slow.

All of these things can be fine-tuned in time.
