Police figures show that burglary in Barnet has increased.

New data from the Mayor’s Office of Policing and Crime (MOPAC) revealed that burglary went up by 3.7 per cent in Barnet between the end of 2016 and 2017.

Unmesh Desai, the Labour London Assembly spokesperson for policing and crime said: “It is alarming that we have seen burglary begin to rise in Barnet, and it is imperative that the local police do all that they can to urgently stem this rise.

“The inescapable reality is that our police force is facing almost insurmountable pressures as a result of substantial Government cuts to their budget.

Since 2010 government funding to the Metropolitan Police has been cut by £700 million and their overall budget is £3.3 billion

The number of police officers in London has also dropped below 30,000 for the first-time in 15 years.

Mr Desai added: “This has adversely affected the Met’s capacity to effectively investigate crimes such as burglary and will continue to do so unless we see swift and robust intervention from the Government.”

“With crime rising in the capital and across England and Wales, it is outrageous that the Government are still failing to respond adequately to the urgent need for more police resources.”

In London as a whole burglary has gone up by 5.9 per cent.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced in February that he would invest an extra £110 million into the Metropolitan Police.

Earlier this year he also announced a £45 million Young Londoners Fund to invest in youth services across the capital to stop young people getting involved with crime.
