A "trailblazing" suffragette's birthday was celebrated with a party on Sunday.

Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist and leader of the British suffrage movement that helped women win the vote.

The event at Hendon Town Hall on Sunday alongside other Pankhurst Parties across the country in honour of the suffragette.

Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Reuben Thompstone, said: “It’s important that we remember the women who have suffered and given their lives to help others enjoy the democratic rights that they couldn’t.

"I'm truly privileged to have taken part in this event.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage and the 90th anniversary of equal suffrage between men and women.

The celebration included traditional Sri Lankan and Nepalese dances Cllr Richard Cornelius laying a wreath and a speech by Lieutenant Colonel Angela Richardson about women in the armed forces.

The event was also attended by Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers, Labour councillor Alison Moore and Conservative Women’s Organisation's Gonul Daniels and Jill Summers.
