A man has been taken to hospital with multiple facial and head injuries after being found in the street following a suspected assault early this morning. 

Cleveland Police were alerted by the North East Ambulance Service after the man was found in York Road, Hartlepool. shortly after midnight.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to the James Cook University Hospital.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Detectives in Hartlepool are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a report that a man had been assaulted in the early hours of today (Saturday 4th May).

Police received a call just before 00:40am from ambulance service colleagues who said members of the public had found the man near the library on the town’s York Road and they believed his multiple facial and head injuries were due to an assault.

"The 32-year-old man was taken by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call to an incident on York Road in Hartlepool this morning (4 May) at 00:25am.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and the Medicar. One patient was taken to James Cook University Hospital."

The police spokesperson added: "Enquiries are ongoing and we would appeal for anyone who was in the York Road area late last night into early this morning or who has any relevant doorbell/dashcam or CCTV footage to get in touch."
