Flats and a health centre could be included as part of a new library development in North Finchley.

The existing library site, in Ravensdale Avenue, will be closed when the new library in High Road is completed during 2010.

Facilities at the new larger library, at the Furnitureland site, could include up to 80 flats and a health clinic, or pharmacy service, if the plans are approved.

The planning application is due to go to public consultation in the next few weeks.

Until then, residents can benefit from a revamp of the existing building that reopened last week after a refurbishment, aimed at improving services.

Geoff Allen, Barnet Council’s head of libraries, museums and local studies said: “Libraries are still one of the best-used services.

“People use them for reading, information, and somewhere to meet, and that’s why we feel the libraries have a high priority and need some investment to really make them fit for purpose.

“By bringing in other parts of the council that can give advice we hope libraries will increase their use as a focal point for the community.”

The upgrade, which included a new self-service counter, wi-fi technology and decorating, forms part of the council’s £2.2 million improvement of leading libraries across the borough.

Councillor Matthew Offord, cabinet member for investment in learning, said: “We certainly want to make our services most relevant to the people within the community and that includes upgrading our current library’s stock and buildings, and also renewing, improving and refurbishing new libraries in the communities.

“We want to provide services that people need.

“They can come in and use it not only as a place of entertainment, enjoyment and education, but also when they need to access vital council services.”
