Plans to extend parking restrictions in West Hendon have been branded “ludicrous” and “money making”.

The proposed amendment to the controlled parking zone (CPZ) would prevent residents parking in roads near Hendon train station before 10pm, unless they buy a permit.

Currently, restrictions are in place from 10am for one hour to deter commuters from parking in the area.

But under Barnet Council proposals, the hours of operation will extend from 10am until 10pm, with residents being asked to pay £40 for an initial permit and £70 for each additional one.

Free parking bays in the residential streets would also be turned into permit holder spaces during the amended hours.

Sharon Yemoh, 23, of Vicarage Road, who has organised a petition against the plans, said: “What they have suggested is ludicrous.

“It’s a case of them taking liberties and making money from the changes. Why try to fix something that is not broken?”

Audley Close resident, Muks Rabadia, 28, added: “The permits don’t guarantee a parking space. It’s just money guaranteed for the council. The yellow lines will be in force during those times and there is already not enough parking space around here.”

A council spokesman said the changes were being proposed following a consultation in June with residents and traders.

He added: “No decisions have been made at this stage and all views will be carefully considered.”
