Activities encouraging people to green up and clean up around their streets are set to be launched this month.

The green group Environmental Campaigns (ENCAMS) is kickstarting this year's Big Tidy Up campaign on Tuesday, March 24 and wants volunteers to sign up to help clear their neighbourhoods of rubbish.

The nationwide anti-litter campaign urges community groups to come together to don green tabards and take bin bags out to clean up around where they live.

A spokesman for the campaign said: “If you’ve had enough of seeing litter strewn across your neighbourhood then this is your chance to do something about it.”

ENCAM want residents, schools, church groups and businesses to get on board.

More than ten events have already been arranged across the borough. Among those to have signed up are Underhill Infants School and groups named the Sunnyfields ECO Team and Freshen Up Finchley.

Daniel Morris, of the Sunny Hill Residents Association, said it is important for people to take pride in their own open spaces.

“If we don’t do it we won’t have them anymore,” he added.

“There is a responsibility for the community to look after the public areas. The council can pay for park keepers but that would just take funding away from other projects.

“We are trying to promote kids and the youth involvement in the clean-ups so they have a sense of belonging to their park and are less likely to vandalise it in the future.”

The Times-series will be following as many events across the borough as possible, and the reporters will be donning their green tabards to help out. Let us know of your campaign by emailing timesnews@london.newsquest.co.uk.
